This morning on the Today Show they are discussing a new report out that demonstrates people viewing Obama as the riskier candidate over McCain. For some reason in the news, they are painting risk as a negative attribute. I found that fascinating. In business, we know, that where there is no risk–there is no growth. In fact, where there is no risk, there is often no leadership at all. Simply working to appease everyone does not lead to growth and advancement. Boards of Directors don’t hire CEOs as puppets, and I don’t expect we’ll be voting for a President that we prefer to flat-line through his White House residency. Give me someone who will provide higher highs and trust that I’m willing to risk the lower lows to get there. Great victory only comes from the willingness to make tough decisions because you believe they are the right choice, not the popular one. In business and in politics, risk is an attribute.

Register for the call here.

And…for those of you who do come to the call, Tom will be giving each of you access to the audio TeleSeminar entitled “Unleash Your Ears — Listening to discern what’s really going on with a team .”

The audio includes 8 key things to listen for when working with groups (or individuals). They are subtle and yet powerful. When you listen for them you will begin to be a much more effective leader and facilitator of teams. Here’s the first 2 things to listen for when working with teams:

Number 1: Genuineness and Accuracy

A Teamwork Coach listens for tone, word phrases and timing.

Does the team (or team member) mean what they are saying? Who is really talking? The past? Needs? Fear?

Number 2: Desires and True Wants

A Teamwork Coach listens for what the person (team) is focused on and ready for.

Do they know what they really want? Are they ready to receive what they really want?

So…join us on Wednesday, July 23 from 1-2 p.m. for this fabulous hour with Tom Heck.

A little over three years ago, I had the honor to meet Kimberly Fulcher. Kim is a business coach and very successful woman entrepreneur, and I knew when I met her that she would go on to change the world (she is just one of those change agents that we all admire and want to be!) As I predicted, Kim went on to found COMPASS, a personal development company committed to improving the lives of women. COMPASS believes that every woman deserves to live the life of her dreams. More important; they know that every one of us has the desire and ability to create that life. All we need is some guidance and inspiration. That’s why COMPASS is here - to help women reconnect with their passion, rediscover their strengths, and regain their confidence. The company is now reaching thousands of women from around the globe, offering them multiple opportunities to connect with each other and get involved in a world changing mission.

On Tuesday, July 22, 2008, I will be a guest on the COMPASS Coach Cast at 12:00 Pacific/3:00 Eastern. The call will be one hours. The dial in number is:

Dial 1-712-432-3900
Conference Access Code: 3164266 #

I hope you can join us for this call.

During a birthday party earlier in July, Senator Obama allowed his daughters to be interviewed by Access Hollywood. He is now saying that this move was not appropriate, given their young age.

I do think that they were probably caught up in the moment and said “yes” without thinking, but you know what…as a registered voter, I want to know about our potential future leaders’ families and their lives. We all want to know about the wife and kids, because when you see the family of a leader, you can tell a great deal about that leader’s character.

You can see a bit what the senator has to say about all in this interview with Matt Lauer (you will need to fast forward to the end of the video). This whole interview from MSNBC is actually worth watching:

MUNDELEIN, Ill. (July 17, 2008)-Chicago-based Writers of the Round Table’s new book, “EDGE! A Leadership Story,” debuted during a recent groundbreaking teleclass where the book’s author, Bea Fields, executive coach and leadership expert, again raised the bar for actively engaging leaders worldwide with “The Future of Business from the Minds of 10 Top Professionals.”

Business experts and nearly 300 people participated in the discussion about future trends in business and leadership. The class, which mirrored questions being posed to presidential candidates about the economy and leading in the current times, was created out of the huge response to “EDGE!,” a book based on Field’s life’s work as an executive coach and leadership expert.

Publisher David Cohen led an in-depth discussion about today’s immerging leaders. Participants in the virtual roundtable included Fields’ Co-Authors Corey Blake and Eva Silva Travers of Writers of the Round Table, Inc., plus business experts Michael Gerber, Michael Port, Dave Buck, Dickson-Carr, Andy Wibbels, and Kimberly George.

“This is much more than just another business book,” said Fields of “EDGE!” “Its message is a call-to-action to engage leaders everywhere to create their own authentic leadership styles if they want to survive the next few years. The fact that we had so many leadership experts in a deep discussion about the future is extraordinary. I was humbled to be among them and thrilled that these leaders want to question the future of business in a market that calls for deft and constantly evolving leadership skills. This is not a one shot deal. As leaders, we need to come together to have these discussions, and ‘EDGE!’ gives us an exciting foundation to do that.”

Newly released, “EDGE!” combines the storytelling appeal of a novel with the educational approach of business non-fiction. The process of the book’s creation (Field’s partnered with filmmaker Blake and actress/Writer Travers), the final manuscript and the precedent for change and accountability that it sets all exemplify dynamic leadership.

With rave reviews from such business experts as Michael Port (”Book Yourself Solid”) and NBC Universal Executive Sophie Mokhtari (”China Girl”), this book promises to take the industry by storm. Seasoned business veteran Michael Gerber (bestselling author of the “E-Myth” books), described the leading character like this: “She’s direct, has a sureness about her, asks questions I knew I should answer, and in the end achieves what she set out to do, with such deftness and deliberate coolness, I wondered how Corey, Bea and Eva made her up. Only after reading the book did I find out that the coach was based on author and leadership coach, Bea Field: Bravo!”

“EDGE!” is now available from Writers of the Round Table Press, Amazon, and barnesandnoble.com. For more information, visit, edge-book.com.
